My concentration is revolved around mental disorders, specifically depression and anxiety. Growing up, I was severely surrounded by depression and anxiety (not necessarily myself,) as my loved ones around me dealt with it. I have witnessed it front row and have seen the damage it could do. Every now and then, I feel as if I can see glimpses of depression/anxiety staring right at me, and the only way I was able to capture it was through art.

My concentration is birds. My concentration is inspired by the colors and textures that birds are characterized by. I tried to keep a loose style to my pieces. I used bright colors to make the animals stand out. Birds inspired me because they are interesting looking and a free to fly wherever they please. They have true freedom and adventure yet they are so proud, elegant, and carefree.

My concentration uses the simplicity of trees to display the complexity of emotions. Primarily, I have focused on the many different emotions that I have exhibited throughout the duration of my high school career. To best express its variety, I have used a variety of media and overall subject matter, while keeping the constant concept of trees and emotion. Many, if not all of my pieces have an emotional story behind them provoked by a social nature; therefore it is fitting to express them through tangible nature: trees.

My concentration is inspired by the rising issues animals are facing in terms of extinction and endangerment. This is a strong topic that I am passionate about since I work at the zoo, and am well informed on these conservation issues. I wanted to represent an animal's conservation status through various forms of modification, such as through color, body morphing, fading integration, etc. Then based on an animal's level of endangerment/extinction the degree of the modification will match the level. I.e. if an animal is very endangered then it will have more modification than an animal that is only at risk of being engaged.

My goal with these paintings was to use surrealism as a tool to represent certain moods or feelings. As I progressed with the series, I began to focus on eyeballs. I feel like so much of a person’s self comes through in their expressions and, once you remove this, it is difficult to relate or to understand them. Many of the images in my concentration have people without faces, whether they are replaced by eyeballs or simply headless, making them seem unknowable. In pieces like The Moon Makes Me Feel Strange and Swimming at Sundown, I think there is a feeling of loneliness. Even when another figure is present, such as in Does It End Like This?, it is hard for the abstract figure to not strange and set apart.

My concentration was drawing a connection between human and animal behaviors and how one's ANIMALISTIC traits are able to appear THROUGH everyday BEHAVIORS and actions. Some of my pieces are Playful and lighthearted, while others are more serious.

My concentration is focused around automatons, mechs, and other forms of inorganic, artificially intelligent life. I feel that the traditional "A.I. apocalypse" scenario of self-aware machinery is tired and limiting, and I really wanted to explore further aspects of the potential of artificial life. In my concentration, I attempted to explore the moral and psychological implications of an intelligent race with explicit knowledge of a creator, and the knowledge that that creator views the race as inferior and subservient. This includes issues of religion, identity, and self-image created by the situation mentioned above.

Memories are what define who we are; they teach lessons, make us laugh, and help us hold on to what is important to us. For my concentration, I depicted my memories through my favorite mythical creature-- dragons. Every memory has affected my course in life, both good and bad, and in honor of those memories I wanted to bring them to life through the power, elegance, and mystery of the dragon.

My two favorite pieces are probably Life in a Galaxy of Nothing and Urbanite's Eye. I like Life in a Galaxy of Nothing because it was the first piece I willingly did in oil pastel. I used to hate oil pastel, but after creating this piece I understand the media a lot more and like it a lot more. It was also the first piece I created entirely from my mind. The plant is supposed to symbolize human life and emphasize its significance in our giant universe. I like Urbanite's Eye because of the perspective of the buildings. This peace is supposed to depict a big city and the perspective from somebody on a rooftop. They both still could use a bit more touch ups but overall I'm satisfied with them.
My least favorite piece is definitely the End of the World piece. I really really dislike it because I was unable to paint the explosion of the world successfully. This peace was painful to paint because I couldn't get the perspectives right. I probably painted over it at least 5 times. Eventually I plan on going back to fix it, I just need to figure how to paint an asteroid in the right perspective.

My favorite pieces were sacrifice and andromeda devouring the milky way. They both showed a lot of contrast with the black background. The two of them both clearly represent the dark themes I attempt to explore in my pieces. sacrifice showed a new exploration of pattern and abstract subject matter. andromeda devouring the milky way specifically showed my growth in using acrylic paint and my ability to take risk.
I believe my least favorite is sinners because it was one of my earlier pieces and lacks color, which I have been trying to use thoroughly through out my pieces this year.
One of my pieces, the late shift, is also really important to me after I recently re-worked it by filling in the background and re-defining the glow.
/'stadik/ is also a piece I'm extremely proud of, as it was my first true collage and I love the message of it. I was really pleased that I found a way to express what I see as my opposite. The reason the title is formatted phonetically like in a dictionary is because the definition of "static" is important to the piece and "/'stadik/" seems sharper and faker than "static".

This class was one of the best experiences I have had. I really enjoyed learning how to do art and working in different media. You were an amazing teacher Mrs. Huggins. Thank you.
My absolute favorite piece from this year was my change piece, even though it only took me about two class periods. I found that I really enjoyed working in charcoal because it was quick and had tremendous contrast. My best medium is definitely charcoal. Another one of my favorite pieces are my sunflowers. Painting has always been what I enjoyed most as that's what I did before ever taking an art class, but i had mostly worked in oil. Learning how to work in acrylic again was a fun and frustrating experience and it is a medium I ultimately really enjoy and work well in. I do have two other acrylic pieces that I like a lot but were not able to get photos of (will add later) because they weren't available. The pieces are in order from what I believe are my best to my worst.

My favorite pieces would be “Did I Miss Something?” and “Hi there”. “Did I Miss Something?” was my piece for the End of the World prompt. It was inspired by the idea of nuclear bombs and the Cold War. While the idea behind the piece isn’t the most positive, I had an extremely fun time working on it. It is a mixed media piece so I used some of my favorite media like ink, watercolor, and marker. It is also one of the few pieces I can look back on and say I am completely happy with the end result. My other favorite, “Hi there”, is a close up of a rubber duck with its eyes popping out a bit. With this piece, I got very annoyed very quickly with the media, charcoal. Overall, the whole process was full of frustration and anger at how difficult it was for me to handle charcoal. But, when it was finished I was really happy with it. I mostly like the contrast in the eyes and the pop of orange in the beak.

My Favorites pieces were "Egyptian Princess" and "BOOM". Egyptian Princess was my first charcoal piece and it showed me how much i love that medium. I like the contrast in values that I was able to create as well as the texture. In all, I like how I was able to create a realistic and accurate face. I really enjoy my work "BOOM" for many reasons. Mainly, I like the development of a creepy concept that I had and the mood I was able to set in the piece. Additionally, I believe I did a great job with mark making and the technical details of the piece.

My two favorite pieces are "Reaching for Restoration" and "Croissant". "Reaching for Restoration" is one of my favorites because I really enjoy working with ink and I feel as though the piece as a whole is reflective of the style of art that I enjoy creating. "Croissant" is a depiction of, well, my dream croissant. So long story short I had a really great dream where some random guy gave me a croissant and it was the best croissant I had ever eaten (even though it was just a figment of my imagination). I love the bold contrast and find that it always draws my eye.

My two favorite breadth pieces are "Adam" and "Woon Surprise". "Adam" is one of my favorite pieces because I was able to capture a lot of emotion in the piece. It was one of those pieces where I simply had a great desire to draw something really amazing and I ended up enjoying how it turned out. Scratchboard also served as the perfect medium due to the high contrast in the original picture, which was a picture of my cousin. "Woon Surprise" is another favorite, not because it is outstanding in execution, but, instead, due to the great sentimental value it holds. Since Mr.Woon is a teacher I will never forget, I decided to memorialize his existence into a tribute piece commemorating his inspiring quotes of negative and hurtful criticism. It also preserves the existence of a rare photo of Woon with a snap chat filter over his face. The donuts hold, probably, the most significant value of all: Woon's donut business. All of these things further remind me of how much of a living meme he is and further prove why it is one of my favorite pieces.

My two favorite pieces would be "Lucky Cat" and "Future Generation", both done in Charcoal. Charcoal is one of my stronger mediums, so naturally, I enjoy the results of charcoal pieces more. The deep contrast between highlights and shadows are easily attainable through charcoal, and it is apparent especially in "Lucky Cat". "Lucky Cat" is a still-life of a Japanese fortune cat, or Maneki Neko, that I had gotten last summer in the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco. This white porcelain figure is supposed to grant good fortune, as well as symbolize purity and happiness. I specifically chose this subject for a still-life mainly for the reflective quality of the glass ball it is holding, which perfectly demonstrates the beautiful contrast that is created with charcoal. My "Future Generation" piece's purpose is to spread environmental awareness by representing a child in a gas mask. Through the unregulated mass production of factories and the industrial waste and pollution it results in, it is possible for the air to become not breathable in the future. Though the gas mask may be an exaggeration, there are people in China, specifically in Beijing and Hong Kong where it is more industrial, who commonly wear face masks on a daily basis to prevent inhaling the toxic air. I personally like the teddy bear in the piece as it was fun to create the details of the fur, as well as it being an effective symbol of youth and innocence. Representing a child is a device that will hopefully allow people to sympathize and reconsider how their actions are not only affecting the present generation, but the future generation at a much greater cost.
CAROLINA MACHADO'S BREADTH PIECES
My two favorite breath pieces are "unique" and "trust". I like "unique" because it is very bright and utilizes various colors. I did not want the peacock to be realistic so I drew the feathers going in many different directions, making the bird unique to regular peacocks. I believe that my piece "trust" shows the type of style that I love(2D). I did not intend on making a comic themed piece but when I had the idea and saw the finished product I really enjoyed it. I wanted to make it with gray and black tones so that way the words pop out and it adds color to the piece. My breadth definitely showcases my style of art and I also realized I enjoy painting moons. I also really love the way that my piece "skater" came out. The reason I like the pice is because I got to use my favorite theme of space and I loved the way the background came out. I made the watercolor bright and I enjoy the way it bled together. When I use pen and watercolor I tend to only use black , but the white pen makes the man pop.

My top two favorite pieces would have to be my "End of the World" piece and my "Crayons" piece. "End of the World" is one of my favorites because it was my first time trying oil paint and I really like how it turned out. I liked how bright the colors turned out and I did a good job making the fire look realistic. "Crayons" would also be one of my favorite pieces because I like the composition of the page. I think the crayons look realistic and the rainbow coming off the crayon adds to the piece as a whole. I like the simplicity of the piece but also how there is a bit of shading.

My two favorite pieces would have to be "Bully" and "The End of the World" since both of them took the longest to make and seem to have the most vibrant color and value out of all of my pieces. This is also a biased opinion since markers are my media of choice and printmaking is my favorite thing to do in art as well. "The End of the World" also has a lot of different meaning behind it, since one could take the end of the world as losing their loved one or could perceive it as the sun engulfing the Earth and then the rest of the solar system. " A Duck and Water People"is a dramatic representation of how I feel while swimming with my friends. "Telescope/Periscope" is inspired by M.C Escher, since you can't really tell of the device is looking up and reflecting what is in the sky or what is down below it.

My favorite pieces would have to be "My Opposite" and "Duality" and "Face Your Fears". "My Opposite" was the first piece I did that was loose and that bothered me because I like detail and precision more than anything and that is why it came out so good. I wasn't as worried about the details being exact and the use of the bright red against the black makes it stand out that much more. "Duality" was my favorite because of the details in the scales and the warm and cold color schemes. "Face Your Fears" was the first piece I put a lot of emotion into because it has to do with a hard part of my life. I loved the way I got the values to gradually change and the words make it stand out that much more.

My favorite pieces would have to be "Twine" and "Tom". The twine piece was the first piece we had to do and it was intimidating. I hated crayon, but the piece turned out really well. The shadow is probably why I think it looks like one of the best pieces I have. Tom is my other favorite out of these since it was done for my grandmother. Her favorite animal is a gorilla and i did that piece for Christmas for her. It has a wider range of dark and light which give the eyes a lot of depth. I also really like how the eyes turned out.

My two favorite pieces are "Statue" and "Home." I enjoyed painting "Statue," and I think the hair turned out pretty cool. It was based off a prompt called "My Opposite," where the goal was basically to represent the opposite of yourself. I thought a statue was fitting because I am often emotional.
I also enjoyed drawing "Home," and I like how the nest turned out. It represents the idea of a childhood home. Like a nest, the home we grow up in can have a huge impact on our lives, but, ultimately, we must leave it behind.

My favorite pieces are my opposite piece and my end of the world piece. My opposite piece is the one with balloons of bright and "loud" colors. This piece displays my opposite because the opposite of my personality is loud. I like it because the use of bright colors make this piece stand out from the rest of my pieces. My second favorite piece is the "End of the World" piece. It is the image that depicts a dark, dreary rural land that is being swarmed by a tornado. I like it because the graphite makes it look good and depicts the darkness that comes with the end of the world.

My favorite pieces within my breath portion are those that hold some type of personal meaning. That is why my "Fear" piece of mixed media pen and pencil and my Charcoal "Dragon" piece are my favorites. Technically my charcoal piece shows the most depth and shading, and the silver spray paint (that was a mistaken addition in place of fixative) actually created an interesting addition to the composition of the piece. My Fear piece best shows my ideas through the contrast of sharp and rounded objects while the duplication of similar figures allow for more insight into the meaning of the piece, or give opportunity for the observer to further reflect on that piece.

My two favorite pieces are "Let The Paint Lead The Way", and "It Was a Good Day". I chose these pieces because they portray my style of art the most. One showing my deep passion of graffiti, and of textural painting.

My favorite pieces would have to be the cat piece (Outside the Border), the End of the World project, and the Opposite piece. I just like cats so doing the Outside of the Border was fun to create and working with the watercolor pencils for the first time. The End of the World piece was my last artwork and i really had fun with working with the chalk pastels and the blending. The Opposite piece was a nice contrasting project where I could work with completely different types of media so it was something new for me.
Cory's Breadth Pieces
My two favorite pieces are the sinking boat and the snow boarder. The reason the picture of the sinking boat is named Negativity is because it was the piece I used to illustrate my opposite. I am a very happy person and believe that the reason is due to living a life filled with positivity. I have very little negativity in my life is because I choose to not let it affect me. Similar to the way a boat chooses to not let the water surrounding it sink it. But the very minute it chooses to let water in, as a human would let negativity in it sinks them and there life is no longer lived happily. The snowboarding piece is named Home because snowboarding is near and dear to my heart. I love snowboarding and along wait the winter time when I'm finally able to go again. Snowboarding is home to me because it gives me all the feelings that you would imagine the perfect home to be, stress free, relaxing, fun, etc.

My two favorite pieces would have to be Cat Can and Twine. I like Cat Can because I never really knew what I could do with charcoal considering this was the first time I used it. I like how the value of the overall piece, and the angle of the can itself. At the beginning of the year I honestly did not like the twine piece yet now looking back at it I truly do think it was one of my best. I liked how the twine itself does have a 3D effect to it.

My two favorite pieces are my string piece and my threatening dude. Why?! The string piece was the first piece of art i have completed in years and actually turned out not bad. The dude is another because it was the first piece I've done completely on my own in the class. They will both stand as milestones for years to come.

My favorite pieces are Get Some Perspective and Face Your Fears. Ironically, I never liked drawing or art for that matter and those two pieces are what really helped me feel like I belong in this class. Get Some Perspective was the first piece I ever created that I was actually proud of. Ever. In the end, it helped me to realize that I want to be an architect; something I never would have dream I wanted to do. With the Face Your Fears Piece, it was the first drawing that I interpreted as my own variation of the prompt, rather than just a generalization. It really helped me to make my style connect to my thoughts and feelings.

Out of all of my pieces on display, my two favorites are the painting of the chicken and the cat that spilled coffee. I enjoy the piece with the chicken because of the bright colors. The chicken is also heading home as it is approaching dusk which I really like because chickens actually do that. I also like the piece that displays the cat because it is portraying how careless the cat is when it comes to material possessions. I also like how the color of the coffee disrupts the black and white tiles.

My favorite breath pieces are Face your Fears and My Opposite. My favorite medium to work with is acrylics. I feel like I do best when I am painting. In the Fear piece I finally thought I did a good job portraying something. I also liked the colors and composition of the piece. My Opposite is an open mouth because I am usually very shy. The dark background make the colors of the mouth come out more, which makes it even more extroverted and more of my opposite.

Out of the 12 art pieces I've done throughout the year 2014-2015 my two favorite pieces are "Beyond the Boarder", which was done in water colors and water color pencil and Indian ink, and "Duality", which is done with acrylic paint. "Beyond the Boarder" is supposed to depict curiosity and awe that becomes corrupt or ruined with reality of knowledge. The colors draining and the creatures becoming more grotesque depict this colorless reality having its effect on one's curiosity. As for my piece, "Duality" it is supposed to represent the two sides of my personality: creativity and wonder on one side; shyness on the other. What I like about these pieces is the imagination I put into creating them, the different types of creatures I could come up with to represent these emotions, and the vibrant colors that come with them.

My favorite piece in this selection is the scratch art of the deer called "Warmth". For me it was a very rewarding piece, being one of my final pieces of the year I really took pride in the development of my art skills throughout the year. My second favorite piece here would have to be the one named "Disassociated," I become extremely consumed in the art of using dipped ink. It taught me control, as well as the truth in "some things cannot be undone."
